During your stay in Charleston don't be afraid to explore the towns and communities outside of the peninsula. The city of Charleston proper extends to the mainland and islands west of the Ashley River. These communities include James Island, John's Island, and Folly Beach beyond the intracoastal waterway and the historic Ashley River Road plantations upriver.
Further to the South along the coast you'll find the sleepy communities of Wadmalaw Island and Rockville, as well as the remote resort islands of Kiawah and Seabrook.
On the other side of the peninsula, to the East of the Cooper River you'll find the suburban communities of Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms.
With these day trips we hope to offer you highlights of the attractions that each of these communities has to offer, as well as tips and bearings on how best to navigate both geography and time among these off-the-beaten-path destinations.
